I'll start with the personal information as it's best to get the 'elephant out of the room'. I'm intersex, I spent the majority of my career as a male, as David as it was the path of least resistance. However, I always felt I was lying to myself and therefore never honest to anyone else. The pressures of functioning day-to-day were intense and underwrote every thought and action. Eventually I accepted who I was, followed advice and adjusted. It's been interesting, very challenging and I've learnt a lot about different perspectives, conflict avoidance and mediation.
I'm married to my wife, Jasmin. I have an adult daughter and I live between Zurich (my home) and our house in the UK (our old home). I'm an Irish and UK citizen who grew up and went to school in the UK, Malta and Germany and I subsequently lived and worked in Chile, India, The US, Switzerland, France & Singapore. It was a great start in life and the multi-cultural exposure taught me a lot about different cultures and about tolerance and understanding. I also learnt the basics of many different languages.
I started my career as a game’s designer and developer whilst at school in the 1980's working with Sinclair Research, Chequer Tapes, as well as Sinclair Programs and User magazines seeing several games published globally. I expanded my games development to other platforms including Atari and Commodore, but I decided to follow the family tradition of military service at the age of 16.
I joined the Royal Navy first as a Radar Operator and later as a Recon Photographer before leaving after suffering active duty related injuries. I recommenced my career as a games designer and coder before becoming an IT Developer and then joined banking as an FX Trader in the 1990's. Since then I've worked between technology and the business leveraging both sets of skills. I've been fortunate enough to work in the UK, back home in Ireland, Seattle, New York, Hyderabad, and our home in Zurich, Switzerland.
I enjoy a challenge, education is a wonderful thing and continuous development is something we should actively seek. In 2013 I graduated as the first non-Muslim, non-Arabic speaking Applied Research Masters student in Islamic Banking and Finance. I chose this option as a 'prove-to-myself' study option after I became dyslexic following a bout of bacterial meningitis I had caught leading a diving expedition in the Red Sea.
I've been very fortunate to work over the years as an employee or independent consultant to some amazing companies. I've touched on a few below.
