So, How did it start?
I started my career in the Royal Navy, as a photographer but saw a short career due to my in-service injuries which I then followed by training as a journalist completing a City & Guilds and NUJ membership. As a journo I worked back home in Ireland as a freelancer for the national dailies and as a local correspondent for primarily UK sheets including The Guardian, The Daily Mail, and The Times. I eventually found myself working in the Irish market focusing on Film, TV, and entertainment as a Dublin-based correspondent. Using my network and my camera operator training from the Royal Navy, I found myself being offered opportuntiies to join productions which being a freelancer, I was happy to accept. And that’s how it all started.
What do I do?
I work as a freelance sound engineer and DoP/ camera operator working for some strange reason,, not by design, in the horror genre. I run my own kit unless hire equipment is the appropriate option with my primary camera being an Arri Amira or BlackMagic 6k’s if lightness and mobility is the goal or, if discrete hand-held is required, Canon C100’s/200’s. Naturally I back it all up with sticks, monitors, etc. I’m a certified Arri larger camera specialist albeit it’s very rare that I get my hands on anything larger than the Mini LF due to budget constraints (Alexa 65, I wish).
Sound wise, my primary kit is based around a SoundDevices MixPre10-ii with a Zoom F8nPro setup if space or mobility is needed. I use multipe mixers when a recorder isn’t required such as the SQN-4s. Mike wise, I either use my Sennheiser 416’s or Rode NTG3’s for boom work (I have too many poles) and I have probably way too many wireless kits as I duplicate for each bag. I also use Deity Timecode generators and slates providing them where needed to make post simpler for the whole team.
And my Experience?
Everyone wants to know what i’ve worked on, it’s an obvious question. So, here’s a brief insight:
I’ve been lucky to have worked on some great productions including 28 Weeks Later, King Arthur, Saving Private Ryan, The Hills Have Eyes 2, Children of Men, The Waterboarding, Insidious, The Bill, that kind of stuff.
Now, to be transparent, i used to work under a different name, Dave Evans, a lot of my old credits are under that name and for various reasons (the obvious), I’ve chosen to refresh my portfolio which I’ll be working on shortly.
